In the beginning of the smartphone era, SONY and NOKIA were the brands to beat but now that’s not the case. At a point there was no news about both brands regarding smartphones but recently they have been making comebacks. In this article we are looking at Sony and Nokia’s latest flagship smartphones, would they showcase innovation to take them back to the top? We would know at the end of the article. We are comparing the latest flagship smartphones of both brands as at the time of writing this article, Nokia’s 9 PureView and Sony’s Xperia 1 III.
Note: Flagship in this article refers to the brand’s smartphone with the best known features till date.
Both smartphones have similar shapes: rectangular body with a slight curve at edges. The Xperia 1 III weighs more and is bigger than the 9 PureView. Both smartphones have a glass front, glass back and an aluminium frame. The glass front of the Xperia 1 III has Gorilla Glass Victus protection while the glass back has Gorilla Glass 6 protection. The glass front of the 9 PureView has Gorilla glass 5 protection. Both smartphones have Hybrid dual sim options and only accept Nano-sim cards. The Xperia 1 III has IP65/1P68 dust/water resistance with a water resistance of up to 1.5m for 30 minutes.
The 9 PureView and the Xperia 1 III both have non-removable batteries. The 9 PureView with 3320 mAh battery, fast charging 18W, Quick charge 3.0. The Xperia 1 III has a 4500 mAh battery with fast charging 30W and reverse wireless charging. Both smartphones boast of USB Power Delivery and fast wireless charging. The 9 PureView has fast charging of 18W while Xperia 1 III has 30W fast charging.
The Xperia 1 III has a quad rear camera with 12,12, 12 and 0.3 Mega-pixels respectively. The 9 PureView has 5 rear cameras with 12MP each. For the selfie cameras 9 PureView has 20MP while Xperia 1 III has 8MP.
In terms of front camera video features and capabilities the 9 PureView is the clear winner of both smartphones. In terms of back camera features and capabilities the Xperia 1 III wins.
Common Camera features on both smartphones include Zeiss optics, HDR and panorama.
The Xperia 1 III is a 5G enabled phone, so if it is important to you to have 5G network on your phone definitely go for the Xperia 1 III. The Xperia 1 III has the android 11 while the 9 PureView has the Android 9.0 but is upgrade-able to android 10. The 9 PureView doesn’t have a headphone jack. The 9 PureView has a 6GB RAM while the Xperia 1 III has 8GB RAM. The Xperia 1 III has two ROM options, 256 GB and 512GB the 9 PureView has only 128GB. The Xperia 1 III has a memory card slot. In terms of display the Xperia 1 III wins with a better display resolution of 643 ppi. In terms of price the 9 PureView is more affordable.
Both smartphones are amazing to say the least and it is very interesting that Nokia 9 PureView which was released in 2019 still has some features that beat the more recent Xperia 1 III. If you are a heavy phone user (e.g a gamer) the Xperia 1 III might be the better choice due to better display, battery and processor. I’d say with a little more innovation both brands might be able to regain their position at the top. What do you think?
